My boat and my business is called Craftybird and my name is Sally. I travel with crew Brindley and Daisy on my floating leather and upcycling workshop. A favourite project at the moment is the “Welly boot windlass holders” which support the Waterways Chaplains, and are a great way to make use of old welly boots.
I make a small range of things to buy online and in person, if you see me on the towpath. I love to receive commissions for bespoke projects. And, if I can, I mend things while you wait.
Leatherwork has been in my life for a long time now! Probably getting on for 20 years… I started learning leather-craft because I was looking for a collar for my first dog. I visited a number of different shops and stalls around the place when I first got him, and I just couldn’t find something that I liked. So I decided to find out how I could make him something instead.
Being on a boat, I’ve resisted getting involved in bigger projects, because I don’t have the space. However (and perhaps because of this) this is something that I aspire to!
I post my general location on my website craftybird.uk and I have Instagram which is @4craftybird and Facebook which is craftybird.uk. You can also email me at sally@craftybird.uk. If you send me an email, I can let you know more precisely where I’m going to be and my general direction of travel. I always try to moor near easy access for a car.
Oh yes! – you could also look out for Season 2 of a programme called Narrow Escapes on Channel 4 … I had a lot of fun with the film crew when they joined me and the girls for a few days last year!!
